Blue-clad volunteers huddled inside MP Don Stewart’s re-election campaign office for a pep talk before emerging into the Saturday morning sunshine, clipboards and brochures in hand, on a mission. 

“We’re trying to turn the tide,” one said to another as they fanned out to convince Toronto—St. Paul’s voters to hold this swath of midtown as a Conservative Party of Canada toehold in a city that, until last June, had elected only federal Liberals since 2015.
