In response to the looming tariff threats from the U.S. and the growing push to buy local, I set out to see just how possible it is to cook a dish using only Canadian-grown and produced ingredients.

I went to No Frills, where I picked up a box of spinach from a well-known Canadian brand, only to see it was grown in the U.S. Then, I grabbed a bag of chips from an Ontario-based company, only to find a “Product of USA” label. Meanwhile Lays Canada, part of the American snack conglomerate PepsiCo, actually makes their chips in Canada (along with lot of other multi-national food companies). The realization hit me — just going to a Canadian grocer or picking up a Canadian brand isn’t enough. Even products with Canadian labels often hide fine print …
