Canada, Eastern Washington officials give perspective on northern border as Canada invests $1.5 billion for security resources.
“Less than 1% of the total crossing of the U.S. borders are coming from Canada, but of that less than 1%, that has gone down 89% since last June,” said General Consul of Canada Northwest Craig Weichel.
Weichel notes these crossings include illegal fentanyl crossings.
“Canada has invested a total of 1.5 billion dollars in the last couple of months to address this problem,” said Weichel.
He says those funds have gone to 10,000 additional border personnel, Blackhawk helicopters, drones and K-9 units to reduce security risks.
