Canada will fight with “purpose and force” against the trade war unleashed by Donald Trump, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday, warning that tariffs will harm the global economy and affect millions of Canadians and Americans.

Even though the U.S. President excluded Canada from new reciprocal tariffs that he imposed on global trading partners, he kept steep import levies on Canadian steel, aluminum, and vehicles and auto parts.

Mr. Carney, the Liberal Leader, paused his campaign in the federal election to hold meetings on tariffs and will talk to provincial and territorial premiers Thursday. He made only a brief statement Wednesday after he entered a cabinet meeting on Canada-U.S. relations, promising retaliatory countermeasures, but he did not say what they would entail.
