TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The prospect of a trade war could leave Ohio businesses and consumers with rising costs.

For Northwest Ohio and the broader Ohio fishing industry, tariffs could make the outdoor sport more expensive.

Jeff Goehring is the owner of A-N-J Bait and Tackle in Port Clinton east of Toledo.

“When I started in ‘81 fishing and ‘89 we did okay,” Goehring said.

And for decades he has seen the highs and lows of fishing on Lake Erie.

“They’re not going to be happy about it,” he said.

With the prospect of a 25 percent tariff on Canadian goods, the fishing industry could be among those hardest hit.

“You’re going to really have to shop,” Goehring said.

A-N-J’s owner said his shop would be hit with increased prices primarily for bait like worms that they receive from Canada, but he also isn’t ruling out prices on other items they may get from overseas.
