A new report finds Canadians are reconsidering plans to move to the U.S.

Donald Trump’s election and new tariffs are factors in the shift and it could mean the loss of billions in real estate transactions, real estate brokerage Zoocasa said in a new report.

Among Canadians who have considered relocating to the U.S. in the past five years, slightly more than half (52 per cent) report that Trump’s election as president has lowered their likelihood to consider moving to the U.S., an April survey by a Canadian employment platform Humi found.

“Canadian buying habits are shifting in response to economic challenges and trade war tensions with the United States,” Zoocasa said in the report.

The shift comes as many Canadians are also choosing to buy local and foregoing travel to the U.S.

Zoocasa said Canadians make up the largest share of foreign real estate buyers in the U.S. and a slowdown in activity could cause big financial repercussions.
