Prime Minister Mark Carney says he told U.S. President Donald Trump during a call on Friday that Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs on American goods next week, in response to expected additional trade actions from Trump.

The first-ever call between the two leaders came as Canada weighs its response to Trump’s latest round of tariffs set to hit the country’s auto sector next week, all amid a critical federal election campaign. Wednesday will also see so-called “reciprocal” tariffs on all foreign trade, including Canada.

“The Prime Minister informed the President that his government will implement retaliatory tariffs to protect Canadian workers and our economy, following the announcement of additional U.S. trade actions on April 2, 2025,” a readout of the call from the Prime Minister’s Office said.

Despite the warning, Carney’s office described the conversation as “very constructive,” while Trump, in a Truth Social post earlier Friday, called it “extremely productive.”
