Casper College students celebrate cultural reconnection at campus powwow [Video]

CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) – On Saturday, the Indigenous Student Alliance at Casper College held its second annual traditional powwow on campus.

Folks from across the state came to take part in the celebration, enjoying an afternoon of traditional songs and dance.

The Indigenous Student Alliance was founded by Lysander Black Bird back in 2022 after he realized the college didn’t have a club for Native students. In the process, he has been able to reconnect with his culture.

He explains, “I chose my education over learning more about my culture, which I regret partly. I’m the type of person who [dives in head first]. I was like yeah, we can do this.”

The Indigenous Student Alliance has helped cultivate community among Native students on campus, and that sense of community is what this powwow is all about.
