Chatham children physical altercation, police aware [Video]

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said it is aware of a video going viral on social media, showing a physical incident between two children in the area.

Police released a statement that an investigation was launched. No charges have been laid and police note both children involved were under the age of 12.

“In accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, youths aged 12 to 18 years old may be charged criminally for offences committed; however, officers are required to explore extrajudicial measures before proceeding with formal charges,” read a news release on the matter.

Those measures are to focus on rehabilitation and accountability, instead of punitive action.

However, since the children were under the age of 12, no criminal charges can be laid against those involved. The CKPS said they went over the incident with the children’s parents, giving guidance and support.
