The tempestuous weather that descended on southern B.C. Monday afternoon will linger for the next few days, with a storm forecast for Christmas Day.

According to Environment Canada, warnings remain in place for Metro Vancouver, the Southern Gulf Islands, the Sunshine Coast and parts of Vancouver Island.

The weather agency said the low pressure centre that issued strong winds Monday evening is moving its way north, bringing the gales to the central coast Tuesday morning.

Strong winds will continue to batter portions of West Vancouver Island and the Central Coast throughout Tuesday, Christmas Eve.

The respite from rain on Tuesday morning will be brief, with a new storm set to usher in early Christmas morning.

On Christmas Day, a powerful frontal system will arrive on the South Coast and Vancouver Island, bringing very strong winds and heavy rain throughout the region, Environment Canada said.
