Clerical error leads to inmate released by mistake and manhunt for Caledon fugitive: police [Video]

A Caledon inmate released from an Ontario correctional facility due to a “clerical error” is back in police custody, investigators say.

Halton Regional Police say that 44-year-old Caledon man Sunil Ragoonanan was released from the Maplehurst Correctional Complex on Monday “as a result of a clerical error.”

Ragoonanan was aware of the error but “failed to return to Maplehurst,” police said in a release.

The mistaken release led police to seek a warrant for the at-large fugitive, and said he was facing charges related to “breaches of his release orders.”

Police said Ragoonanan was believed to have returned to the Caledon area and said the 44-year-old was located and arrested by police on Tuesday.

Anyone with information on this investigation is asked to contact Halton Regional Police at 905-825-4747 ext. 2410. Anonymous tips may also be provided to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting www.ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
