A number of Beer Store locations are set to shut down soon in Ontario.
The company has made three separate announcements recently about closures that are slated for June and July.
The decisions come amid the expanded alcohol marketplace in Ontario.
Last year, thousands of convenience stores, as well as additional grocery stores, were permitted to start selling booze, except for spirits.
The changes expanded Ontario’s alcohol market well beyond the two main stores where consumers were previously able to purchase booze: The Beer Store and the LCBO.
Several Beer Store locations have shut down since, with the union representing workers blaming it on the change.
“The Beer Store is making the difficult decision to close these locations. We will continue our focus on sustainability and recycling as we modernize operations in a changing marketplace,” Ozzie Ahmed, the vice president of retail at The Beer Store said following the latest closure announcement.
