CLOSURE: Chain brand with Canadian roots will close Ontario store [Video]

A store that specializes in hardware, construction material and home improvement products is closing one of its Ontario stores.

Rona, located on Royal Windsor Drive along the border of Mississauga and Oakville, will shut its doors permanently on May 8.

A sign on the front of the building announced the closure, which has since been confirmed by store personnel.

With about 425 stores across the country, Rona is owned by a U.S.-based private equity firm but has its origins in Canada.

Created in 1939 through an alliance of independent Motreal hardware retailers known as “Les Marchands en Quincaillerie” (The Merchants of Hardware), the stores started to use the Rona moniker in 1960 and is based on the letters of the first names of two of the original founders, Roland Dansereau and Napoleon Piotte.

The chain was Canadian-operated until 2012, when it was purchased by U.S. hardware giant Lowe’s. In 2022, …
