Energy experts say the tariff could increase U.S. gas prices by up to 70 cents a gallon.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — President Donald Trump on Saturday signed an order to impose stiff tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China, drawing swift retaliation from the country’s North American neighbors in an emerging trade war.

The order also brings the potential for higher costs for shoppers, disrupted supply chains and a loss of jobs.

Trump declared an economic emergency in order to place duties of 10% on all imports from China and 25% on imports from Mexico and Canada. But energy imported from Canada, including oil, natural gas and electricity, would be taxed at a 10% rate.

Trump’s decision to impose a smaller tariff on Canadian energy is aimed at minimizing disruptive effects, however, people here in the states are still concerned about the potential rise in gas prices.
