The trucks are rolling, soil is moving, and the foundation is set for North America’s first small modular reactor build at Darlington Nuclear Generating Station in Clarington.

“We are ready for construction on this game-changing project,” Ontario Power Generation (OPG) said as construction finally gets underway on the $21 billion project. “The future of nuclear will be made in Ontario.”

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission approved Ontario Power Generation’s plan in April to build the first of four reactors at the site in Bowmanville, part of a larger push to rely even more heavily on nuclear generation to power the province’s growing electricity demands.

The Ontario government gave the project the green light earlier this month.

The project will be the first of its kind in the G7, producing enough reliable, affordable and clean electricity to power the equivalent of 1.2 million homes, supporting thousands of jobs across the province …
