The Transportation Ministry says the Coquihalla Highway remains closed in both directions from Hope to Merritt, B.C., on Saturday due to a sinkhole.

It will remain closed until at least 4 p.m. when the next update is expected.

The sinkhole is located south of the Great Bear Snowshed.

The Ministry of Transportation said the sinkhole was discovered on Thursday evening by a contractor in the northbound slow lane.

“Crews responded quickly and determined that the sinkhole was an isolated incident related to Trans Mountain’s pipeline boring work in the area,” the ministry said in a statement.

Crews appeared to have patched the hole by late Friday afternoon, but the route remains closed.

The ministry said crews were hoping to open the route early Friday afternoon but geotechnical complications delayed that opening.
