Dead geese at Gettysburg College test positive for avian flu [Video]

Avian flu continues to spread rapidly across the country.

In a message sent to the campus community over the weekend, the college’s Associate Dean of Campus Life said the Pennsylvania Game Commission is removing carcasses as the ice on the pond melts.

Avian flu is continuing to spread rapidly nationwide, and as of Tuesday, the CDC is reporting 67 confirmed cases in humans across the US. One person has died.

The virus is spreading between wild birds, poultry and even dairy cattle but doctors say the risk for animal-to-human transmission remains low.

“There is a special cohort of poultry handlers or cattle handlers who are at increased risk of getting this disease compared to the general public,” said Dr. Raghav Tirupathi, medical director of infectious diseases at WellSpan Chambersburg.

Dr. Tirupathi says students at Gettysburg should listen to the college’s directions but shouldn’t worry too much about getting sick.
