WASHINGTON, D.C. (KTTC) – The day following President Donald Trump’s latest and most severe set of tariffs, several organizations are urging a trade approach that strengthens American agriculture rather than destabilizing it.
Trump announced on Wednesday a new 10% across-the-board tariff in addition to reciprocal duties that will apply to specific trade partners, including China, the European Union, India, Japan and South Korea. This is in addition to the tariffs currently in place on Mexico and Canada.
“President Trump is trying to take us back to a time when we didn’t depend on other countries, but that time has passed. Our markets are intertwined,” said Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish. “Minnesota farmers have spent decades building trade relationships with other countries and Trump’s tariffs are destroying the trust we’ve worked so vigorously to establish as a reliable trading partner.
