Tariff hikes are disrupting the industry. Can consumers help balance the cost?

WASHINGTON — WUSA9 is keeping an eye on how President Donald Trump’s tariff hikes are set to impact the DMV community. While foreign imports are expected to cost more, we may also feel the effects on American-made products — like locally crafted spirits.

Canadian provinces like Ontario and Quebec have already started pulling American products from shelves.  Liquor can make a big difference in your cocktail, and it may start costing you more.

“There are beautiful nuances and delicious rums out there. We want to make those. We want to get those into the hands of as many people as possible,” said Jordan Cotton, the cofounder of Cotton and Reed, the first rum distillery in D.C.

The distillery first opened its doors in 2016.

“We start with a blend of cane syrup and black strap molasses.”
