A 31-year-old man from Jasper, Ont. is dead following a single-vehicle crash south of Smiths Falls on New Year’s Day.

Emergency crews responded to the crash on County Road 29 shortly before 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Ontario Provincial Police say a car left the roadway, entered a ditch and struck a tree.

“It later caught fire. The lone occupant of the vehicle was removed from the car by a passerby and (a Smiths Falls Police Service) officer. He was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the OPP said in a statement.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Leeds County OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and refer to incident E250000623.

Smiths Falls is located 75 km south of downtown Ottawa.
