Driveway paving fraud linked to human trafficking in Ontario: OPP [Video]

Driveway paving fraud is sometimes linked to human trafficking in Ontario, according to the OPP.

This type of fraud has been around for many years and as summer approaches, it will likely circulate again.

Typically, a scammer will approach a homeowner with a seemingly low-cost paving offer. The fraudster will often pressure the homeowner to make a quick decision and require large upfront payments.

Over the past few years, the East Region OPP said it has responded to multiple reports of persistent, persuasive and sometimes aggressive individuals going door-to-door, or calling, offering to pave or repave driveways.

Residents are left with poor quality or unfinished work, police said.

Some of these fraudulent companies use human trafficking victims, OPP said. Police said they exploit vulnerable worker populations such as unauthorized migrant labourers. The workers may be poorly paid and be exposed to poor working and living conditions.
