An alarm at a construction site in Newcastle Friday led to the arrest of a local man on drug and property damage charges, with the arrest made after he tried to escape on an electric scooter.

Durham Police responded to the alarm near Grady Drive and Rudell Road in Newcastle, just north of King Avenue (Highway 2) to find the man trying to gain access to the construction office. Police said the man tried a getaway on his scooter but was taken into custody, where he was found with $50,000 worth of drugs.

Further investigation, police said, linked the man to property damage at the Newcastle GO station lot.

Ryan DaSilva, 41, is charged with obstruct police, mischief/damage to property (under $5,000) and six counts of trafficking in drugs.

He was held for a bail hearing.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Cst. Lahnalampi of East Division at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2111.
