Eastern Washington events to spotlight Missing and Murdered Indigenous People crisis [Video]

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell announced in a release the urgent need for justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIWP) ahead of the National Day of Awareness on May 5.

“May 5th is a day we remember the victims of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People crisis and recognize the suffering of families and Native communities,” Sen. Cantwell said.

Cantwell’s 2020 legislation, Savanna’s Act, aims to improve coordination among law enforcement agencies and provide resources to tribal governments.

In June 2023, following Cantwell’s advocacy, the U.S. Department of Justice launched the Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons Regional Outreach Program, appointing personnel in Eastern Washington to address cases.

In July 2023, Cantwell introduced the Parity for Tribal Law Enforcement Act to support tribal police departments in hiring and retaining officers. The bill was favorably reported to the Senate in September 2024.
