People across Ontario should hear the distinctive emergency alert tone on phones and other devices on Wednesday.

The Alert Ready test is scheduled on Wednesday at 12:55 p.m. in Ontario.

The alert delivers critical and potentially life-saving alerts to Canadians through television, radio and LTE-connected and compatible wireless devices, according to the Alert Ready website.

It can alert people to life-threatening emergencies such as an AMBER alert, wildfire, potentially dangerous and poisonous substances or hazards, or a natural disaster.

While today’s alert is a test, the message could provide life-saving information.

“If you hear this distinctive tone on television, radio or on your wireless device, please pay attention and take action right away,” Alert Ready says.

The Alert Ready system was developed with many partners including federal, provincial and territorial emergency management officials, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Pelmorex, the broadcasting industry and wireless service providers.
