Explosives lead army bomb squad to assist with investigation and charges for Ontario man, police say [Video]

Firearm and explosive-related charges have been laid against an Ontario man after Caledon cops received a tip and launched a nearly year-long investigation.

The OPP says officers from the Caledon detachment got a call from investigators with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in New Brunswick back on March 11, 2024.

Few details surrounding the investigation have been released as the case is under a publication ban, but police say it would be more than a year until officers searched a property in Peterborough.

On March 4, police say members of the OPP Explosives Disposal Unit and the 8th Wing Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit from Canadian Forces Base Trenton assisted in the search where an 83-year-old man was arrested.

Police say John Butcher, 83, of Peterborough, has been charged with:

  • two counts of explosives – making or possessing for unlawful purpose.
