A Mississauga man faces a dozen or so theft, fraud and drug charges after police in Guelph spotted a Mercedes SUV with fake licence plates that led to an arrest on Sunday.

Guelph Police said officers investigated the luxury vehicle shortly after being alerted to its presence in the parking lot of a Woodlawn Road West business in the city’s north end just after 3 p.m.

“Officers began watching the vehicle and a short time later observed a male who matched a witness description leaving the store with a cart full of merchandise,” police said in a news release on Monday.

The man appeared to notice the officers “and briefly returned inside the business,” police said, adding he was stopped a short time later as he walked away from the store pushing the cart.
