False 911 claim about armed gunman near Ontario school sparks police search [Video]

Police are asking for the public’s help in tracking down a man accused of making a false claim about an armed man at a Bowmanville High school in late February.

Durham Police responded to a 9-1-1 call on Feb. 27 from someone who had reported a man with a gun near Clarington Central Secondary School in Bowmanville.

Police attended and confirmed that there was no threat at the high school.

The incident is suspected to be a case of ‘swatting,’ a practice involving deceptive or prank calls to emergency services with the intent of deploying a large police response to a location where no actual threat exists.

Investigation revealed the suspect in this incident used a pay phone at a convenience store located on Glenabbey Drive in Courtice.
