A father and son from the Clarington hamlet of Orono have been arrested after two separate hate crime incidents, including the vandalism of a mosque in the small community.
An unknown man was seen on CCTV footage entering a Canadian Tire store in Bowmanville on January 30 and placing antisemitic pamphlets in various places throughout the store. The pamphlets were located by store employees and turned over to police.
On May 24 Durham Police responded to reports of a hate-motivated incident at a mosque at 111 Church St. N. in Orono. Several vehicles were vandalized, as well as the front door, police said.
On Monday members of East Division Criminal Investigation Branch, along with members of the Durham Police Hate Crime Unit, executed two search warrants at a residence in Orono. Two males were taken into custody without incident. Several items were seized during the execution of the warrant.
