ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is warning of “grandparent scam” robocalls, many of which they claim are coming from outside of the country.
The FCC said many of these calls are linked to organized crime and are getting more sophisticated with the use of artificial intelligence.
The warning comes after more than two dozen Canadians were indicted on charges for allegedly facilitating and participating in a grandparent phone scam stealing tens of millions of dollars from elderly people in more than 40 states across the U.S., including Georgia.
The office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Vermont announced a federal grand jury returned the indictment at the end of February.
The indictment said the fraudsters ran the call centers in and around Montreal, Québec.
