As Jewish people around the world mark the fifth night of Hanukkah, members of Winnipeg’s Jewish community brought the celebration to Canada Life Centre.

Before the Manitoba Moose hit the ice for their game against the Texas Stars, the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg held a menorah candle lighting ceremony. The annual week-long holiday celebrates light, joy and togetherness – with the latter being especially important during the holidays.

“We are so excited to celebrate the joy of Hanukkah in a familiar setting with so many young families from the Jewish community,” said Florencia Katz, the Jewish Federation’s director of education and engagement.

As part of the ceremony, families and children were taught the importance of the holiday, as well as the process by which a menorah is lit.

The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg was also serving sufganiyot – jam-filled fried donuts – in the concourse during the Moose game.
