There are no reports of injuries following an early morning fire at a student residence at the University of Ottawa.
The Ottawa Fire Services says its communications division received a call from a monitoring company at 1:47 a.m. Friday, reporting active fire alarms at the Thompson Residence on University Private.
Firefighters were met with “heavy black smoke coming from the men’s washroom” on the 10th floor of the 22-storey residence. The fire was declared under control eight minutes after firefighters arrived on the scene.
“The ceiling of the washroom was opened up to confirm the fire had not spread,” Ottawa Fire Services said on X.
“The residual smoke had migrated into the women’s washroom that was next to the men’s washroom, so, firefighters began using high pressurized fans to ventilate the 10th floor.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
It was one of three fires that firefighters responded to in a 24-hour period.
