Firefighters will be bringing a message to residents this season to stay safe with working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Whitby firefighters will be knocking on thousands of doors this summer and fall to deliver fire safety information to residents as part of their annual ‘Ever Alert’ campaign.

The theme of the door-to-door campaign is clear: working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms save lives.

Here’s what you need to know to help keep your family safe:

  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly
  • Replace batteries once a year or when the low-battery signal sounds
  • Install alarms on every floor and near bedrooms (following manufacturer instructions)
  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years and carbon monoxide alarms every seven to 10 years (check your manual for details)
  • Make and practice a fire escape plan with everyone in your home

Residents are not required to let firefighters inside their homes.
