Flood risk increases with heavy rain and snowpack melt in Mississauga and Brampton [Video]

Heavy rain and higher temperatures will increase the risk of flooding in Mississauga, Brampton and across southern Ontario.

Credit Valley Conservation issued a Flood Outlook Statement on Monday. The statement is issued as an early notice of the potential for flooding based on weather forecast of heavy rain, snow melt, high wind or other conditions that could lead to high runoff, ice jams, shoreline flooding or erosion.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement as up to 25 mm of rain could fall in southern Ontario. The heavy rain is expected to start Tuesday evening and continue into Wednesday. There is also a chance of thunderstorms.

A temperature high of 8 C is also expected.

“Warmer conditions, combined with the forecasted rain and deep snowpack remaining across the watershed will likely cause significant snow melt,”  Credit Valley Conservation said in the statement.

The melting snow will result in runoff with the greatest flows occurring between tomorrow and Wednesday.
