Flood risk upgraded in Greater Toronto Area [Video]

As the rain falls and temperatures rise, the flood risk is upgraded in the Greater Toronto Area.

Both Credit Valley Conservation and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority have issued flood statements as heavy rain falls on Wednesday.

An Environment and Climate Change Canada special weather statement predicts from 15 to 25 mm of rain for parts of the Greater Toronto Area by Wednesday night. The heavy rain coupled with mild temperatures presents a flood risk.

Credit Valley Conservation upgraded the flood outlook to a flood watch. The watch is in effect from Tuesday through to Thursday.

Localized flooding in low-lying areas and water pooling on roads is possible, the watch notice stated.

“The main concern of the higher flows is the potential for the mobilization of river ice which may cause ice jams,” the statement reads. “Local streams and rivers will also become dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges and dams.”
