Four falcon chicks hatched on Ontario hospital roof [Video]

One year after a single hatchling flew off to start his own life in the skies, four Peregrine Falcon babies were born on the roof of the Oshawa Hospital.

It has been eleven years since Alfrieda and her mate decided the hospital roof was the perfect spot to raise a family, with usually one to three chicks hatched and successfully fledged each year.

Four, however, is unusually high for the pair, who welcomed sisters Ruby and Zazu and brothers Stewie and Paulie to their special nesting box May 8. The chicks were banded Monday.

The falcons were first discovered by members of Lakeridge Health’s Engineering team in 2014 when work crews ventured onto the roof and were attacked by the highly protective parents.

With support from the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Canadian Peregrine Foundation, a nest box was set up for the birds’ well-being and safety. The peregrine …
