Teenagers will get to ride Burlington Transit for free this summer.

The city has approved the plan which will see the free bus rides available for those aged 13 to 19 during July and August.

To participate users will have to have a valid PRESTO card.

According to Mayor Marianne Meed Ward, the initiative aims to make transit more accessible to young residents as well as to encourage them to explore the city conveniently and sustainably.

The program is an extension of one introduced in 2023 where students were allowed to ride free during evenings and weekends. That resulted in a 50 per cent increase in youth ridership during that time.

“Building on this success, the upcoming summer pilot will offer fare-free transit throughout the day, providing greater flexibility for our youth to travel for work, leisure, or other activities,” said the mayor on her website.
