Funding unmarked grave memoriaizations in Ontario city up for debate Monday [Video]

A notice of motion on the books at Oshawa Council for more than two years to memorialize unmarked Social Service recipient graves at the city’s historic Union Cemetery – at a cost of more than $88,000 – will be back on the committee floor Monday, with staff recommending the city continue recognizing the decedents through the online interactive map only.

There has been a motion for the city to foot the bill for the unmarked graves since a Community and Operations Services Committee meeting of April 24, 2023 and staff was asked two weeks ago to provide an update on the “feasibility” of memorializing the graves.

There are 102 Social Services recipients among the 27,770 internments at the cemetery with 57 memorialized by family members, leaving 45 unnamed.

Each burial costs approximately $3,275 (up $260 from 2023) and the city receives $1,300 from Durham Region to provide the service, leaving …
