After more than two years of speculation and flip-flops, Ontario Premier Doug Ford finally confirmed last year that Durham Region’s next hospital will be built in Whitby.
Now the town and its citizens must raise their share of the funding, with nearly $200 million expected from Whitby, its Durham Region neighbours, the Lakeridge Health Foundation, and the Region of Durham itself.
The funding for the new Whitby hospital will be a mix of provincial and local contributions. The provincial government will fund 90 per cent of the construction costs and 100 per cent of planning costs, while the remaining 10 per cent of construction, equipment, technology, land and servicing costs will be covered by the community.
