SAVANNAH, Ga. — It’s a Southern classic and has now been designated Georgia’s official state stew: Brunswick stew.

According to a release from the Georgia House on Monday, HB 233 was signed into law by Gov. Brian Kemp in Savannah, Georgia.

The bill was sponsored by Rick Townsend (R-Brunswick). It designated new official state symbols for the Peach State, including Brunswick stew as the official state stew and cornbread as Georgia’s official state bread.

Additionally, the bill designates the fourth Friday in November as “National Sugarcane Syrup Day” in Georgia.

“I’m proud to see House Bill 233 signed into law—a meaningful step that both honors Georgia’s rich culinary heritage, while also reinforcing our state’s commitment to safeguarding its security,” Rep. Townsend said in the release. “By officially recognizing staples like Brunswick stew, cornbread and National Sugarcane Syrup Day, we celebrate the traditions that connect our communities and define our southern heritage.”
