Grenade scare forces evacuation of residents, partial lockdown of school in Ontario town [Video]

A number of residents were evacuated and a nearby elementary school was partially locked down early Wednesday afternoon after police received reports that an older man was in possession of a grenade at a home in eastern Ontario cottage country.

Kawartha Lakes Ontario Provincial Police said they received a call at around 1 p.m. from a person reporting that an “elderly male” was holding a grenade at a home in Bobcaygeon, about 55 kilometres northwest of Peterborough.

“The complainant immediately stepped away and advised the male that they were calling the police. OPP officers were dispatched to the location and took the male into custody to be transported to the hospital without incident,” police said in a news release on Thursday afternoon.

Subsequent investigation by police led to the discovery of a “historical wartime grenade” in addition to other weaponry, OPP said.
