Holodomor Saskatchewan 2024: Premier, MLAs recognize famine in Ukraine [Video]

A special service was held at Saskatchewan’s Legislative Building Tuesday – commemorating the millions who died during the 1932-33 famine in Ukraine.

Members of the Ukrainian community were joined by Premier Scott Moe and other MLAs for the service, which included a wreath laying ceremony at the Holodomor memorial statue in Wascana Park.

The word “Holodomor” means “extermination by hunger” in Ukrainian. The service in the provincial capital was held in solidarity with Holodomor Memorial Week.

Ken Krawetz, the honorary consul of Ukraine in Saskatchewan was a speaker at the service. He said many Ukrainian people have come to live in Saskatchewan over the years making it their home.

“They have forever been a contributor to developing this province,” said Krawetz.
