A recent Leger poll has shed light on how receptive Canadians are to the idea of becoming part of the United States, after President-elect Donald Trump made headlines earlier this month following a Fox News report that he told Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau the nation “should become the 51st State.”
The survey was conducted online among a sample of 1,520 Canadian respondents aged 18 or older on December 6-9. The results were weighted according to age, gender, mother tongue, region, education and presence of children in the household.
The report said a probability sample of this size yields a margin of error no greater than 2.51 percent.
Why It Matters
While it seems unlikely Canada would opt to become part of the U.S., the nations are very close allies and share historic bonds.
