“I don’t know if you can see behind me? See the smoke?” asked Becca Ignace during a FaceTime call Tuesday with The CJN Daily as she spoke from the health clinic on the Skeetchestn First Nation Reserve near Kamloops, B.C.
The Jewish woman has been using the clinic’s kitchen to cook meals for emergency fire crews who are working to keep the largest wildfire in British Columbia from devouring her family’s home and community. However she is not allowed to spend much time on the reserve. The area has been under an emergency evacuation order since July 2, when the B.C. Wildlife Service began to fight the massive blaze known as the Sparks Lake fire.
At last report, the Sparks Lake fire was 64,484 hectares in size, which covers an area approximately the same size as Toronto. It has now grown to be classified as the largest of the 242 active fires currently burning in the province. Officials say the fire was originally started by humans, …
