JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Take it from me, I was born and raised in Rochester, New York, a city along Lake Ontario and in the heart of the snowbelt. I know winter. 

There are some simple steps you can take to prepare yourself to drive safely in winter weather without overheating and looking like Yukon Cornelius in your Northeast Florida subdivision.

First of all, make sure that your car is filled with gas before the winter weather arrives. This will help in a couple of ways. You’re going to use more gas than normal while you wait for your car to warm up and the full tank of gas will add some extra weight to your car to help prevent sliding on potentially icy roadways (disclaimer, if we get a legit storm just stay home, no amount of gas in your tank will prevent you from sliding then).
