‘Human error’ leads to death of Babirusa at zoo in Ontario [Video]

A 17-year-old Sulawesi babirusa named Bucky—a rare wild pig native to Indonesia—died Saturday at the Toronto Zoo after sustaining a fatal injury.

The zoo announced the incident shortly after 3 p.m. on its official Facebook page.

According to the statement, Bucky gained access to an area occupied by Vishnu, a greater one-horned rhinoceros. Despite the animal care team’s swift response, they were unable to save him. The zoo has launched a full investigation to determine how this occurred, with early findings indicating “human error played a role.”

Bucky, one of the oldest Sulawesi babirusas in North America, was cherished for his gentle nature and curious spirit. The zoo described him as having a “unique charm” that brought joy to everyone who knew him.
