Anglers with ice fishing huts in the Bath/Amherst Island area in eastern Ontario have a 48-hour reprieve in removing them because an approaching cement carrier that will make the ice “dangerously unstable” has been delayed from Thursday morning to Saturday at dawn.
The OPP, in partnership with the Canadian Coast Guard, is warning those with ice fishing huts in the area to remove them before the arrival of MV Sunnavik at the Lafarge cement facility in Bath at 6 a.m. Saturday.
MV Sunnanvik, a Canadian ship with a deadweight of 8,722 metric tonnes (and the first cargo ship with sails on the Great Lakes), will be approaching the shore from the west side of Amherst Island on March 8.
It had initially been expected to arrive Thursday morning but has been delayed by a storm.
