FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTUU/KTVF) – The impact of salmon population decline on Alaska Native communities is among the multiple challenges leaders from 42 Interior communities are in Fairbanks to discuss during the annual four-day Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) annual convention.

″With the Yukon River salmon decline, our young people aren’t able to fish anymore,” said Mackenzie Englishoe, the Chair of the Emerging Leaders Youth Advisory Council for TCC.

Salmon is just one issue tribal leaders, stakeholders, and members of the tribal consortium will discuss. Other topics include the issues Alaska Natives face in the region as well as recent and future developments.

However, it’s not only natural challenges Englishoe is concerned about.

“When I see this new administration pushing for things like Ambler Road or more oil, it makes me very concerned,” she said, referring to the Trump administration’s push to increase oil drilling and mining in Alaska.
