Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations begin with annual parade [Video]

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) -Indigenous Peoples Day is Monday, October 14, but organizations in the Black Hills have begun the celebrations with the 36th annual Black Hills Pow Wow.

The Pow Wow began Friday, October 11, and has many events for people of all ages, including the Indigenous People’s Day Parade in downtown Rapid City on Saturday.

The parade was sponsored by the Great Plains Tribal Leader’s Health Board for the second year.

Rikki Schad helped put the parade together and said the nearly 70 floats registered for the event were more than the organizers expected, but was happy with how successful the parade turned out.

She added that the Health Board knew many Native groups in the area help with the Native American population so they reached out to help build partnerships with the parade.
