Innovative program for dementia patients earns Brampton hospital a national award [Video]

A program focusing on both the emotional and physical needs of those with dementia has earned the William Osler Health System a national health award.

The Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) unit in Brampton implemented what is called The Butterfly Approach in treating older dementia patients, which has led to improved outcomes, including reduced falls, lower medication use, and enhanced patient behaviours.

The award was presented by the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL), a non-profit association that supports healthcare development and initiatives.

Using the Butterfly Approach, care is tailored to an individual patient’s interests, experiences, and needs, rather than a standardized routine. The technique changes the environment and staff interactions to create a more home-like and engaging atmosphere, emphasizing connection, meaningful activities, and a focus on the person’s feelings. 

Osler’s Brampton Civic Hospital is the first acute care setting in the world to adopt the approach.
