INSIDE Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones Bermuda House | Actors Real Estate Interior Design

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have invested over $100 million in real estate worldwide. Catherine once shared, “Like people collect art, we collect homes. We love architecture. It’s a passion.” Their three-acre Bermuda retreat has been a cherished part of their collection for decades, featuring an eight-bed, eight-bath main residence. But this is just the beginning; you’ll also learn about the property’s various amenities and guest accommodations.

Why Bermuda?

Though Michael Douglas was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he has deep roots in Bermuda through his mother, Bermudian-American actress Diana Douglas. Michael’s ancestors have been on the island since the 17th century, making Bermuda a meaningful family haven for him. He shared, “My mother’s Bermudian. Her family’s been on the island since 1610, and I’ve been going all my life.” Douglas finds comfort in returning to the island, where he has around 70 relatives.

The story of their Bermuda home began when their son, Dylan, was 22 months old. Living in Manhattan, Michael and Catherine sought a weekend getaway. During a visit to Bermuda, they realized the island was the perfect spot, just a two-hour flight from New York. Catherine valued having a base where Dylan could grow up with cousins from both sides of the family, leading her family to move from Wales to Bermuda and fall in love with the island.

Exterior

The Bermuda retreat spans three gated and lushly landscaped acres in Warwick Parish. The property includes a 7,300-square-foot main house, a two-bedroom caretaker’s cottage, a one-bedroom apartment, and a two-story guesthouse for Dylan’s cousins. When the couple decided to scale down their real estate holdings, it was listed for $10.6 million in 2019.

The main house, built in Caribbean Colonial style, is adorned with ivy and boasts a lovely painted white roof. The exterior features landscaped gardens, a herb garden, a fruit orchard, a kidney-shaped swimming pool, and a tennis court.

The recently refurbished guesthouse offers guests separate quarters. Built in the 1950s, the four-bedroom cottage once housed the couple while the main house was under construction. Michael emphasized the importance of self-contained quarters, allowing guests to party in the balmy air all night while the hosts retire early.

Interior

The main residence includes eight bedrooms and eight bathrooms. The bedrooms feature wood-burning fireplaces, paneled flooring, and exposed beam ceilings. London-based interior design consultant Stephen Ryan, known for his dramatic contrasts and blending of past and present, decorated the space, creating a cozy island retreat with a timeless English style.

The main house’s ground floor includes lounges, a spacious formal living room, a children’s wing, and an adult section with an en suite guest bedroom, office, and master suite. The master suite leads to a cedar veranda with stunning views of Hamilton Harbour. The kitchen is expensively kitted with wood cabinets and an exposed-beam ceiling, while the dining room is decorated in quiet sage green. The basement houses a gym and a sauna.

In addition to their Bermuda property, the couple owns homes in Majorca, Swansea, NYC’s Central Park West, and a 15-acre property in Bedford Corners, New York.
